Editorial Policy at BuildToolHQ
BuildToolHQ exists to answer one question honestly: what tool or fastener actually does the job, and how do you use it correctly. This page explains how we research, write, and maintain that content.
Who Writes This
Content on BuildToolHQ is developed under the Thomas Leroy persona, drawing on 15+ years of hands-on experience in concrete, masonry, and structural fastening. Every guide reflects real jobsite decisions, not manufacturer marketing copy repackaged as advice.
How We Research
Technical claims — load ratings, code requirements, drill bit sizing, material specs — are verified against primary sources wherever possible: official manufacturer technical data sheets, ICC-ES evaluation reports, and code documents like ACI 318-19 and the IRC. Where a claim can't be traced to a real, current source, we say so rather than presenting an estimate as fact.
Where numbers matter for safety — anchor spacing, load capacity, embedment depth — we cross-check against at least two independent sources before publishing, and we correct errors publicly when we find them rather than quietly editing them away.
How AI Assists Our Work
Some drafting, research compilation, and editing on this site is done with AI assistance. Every fact, spec, and recommendation is reviewed against primary sources before publication — AI assistance speeds up research and writing, it doesn't replace verification. If you spot something that looks wrong, tell us and we'll check it.
Product Recommendations
BuildToolHQ earns commissions through the Amazon Associates program and similar affiliate relationships — see our Affiliate Disclosure for details. Those relationships never determine which products we recommend. When a product is disclosed as a budget or private-label option rather than a primary pick, that's a genuine assessment of its documentation and testing, not a ranking by commission rate.
How We Choose and Verify Products
Every product linked from a BuildToolHQ article is a specific item we have identified by model number, not a search result. Before a product appears in a guide it is checked against its live retail listing for the current rating, review count, price and stock status, and that check is recorded against the product in our database along with anything unusual about the listing — a third-party seller, low stock, or a discrepancy between the title and the specification table.
Products that fail that check do not appear. In practice that means:
- Discontinued models are removed, not quietly substituted. When a manufacturer replaces a tool, we update the article text to name the current model rather than pointing an old model number at a new listing.
- A product has to match what the article says. If a guide describes a hex-head fastener and the available product has a truss head, we either say so plainly on the card or we do not link it.
- Where nothing fits, we leave the section unmonetised. Our guide to timber retaining wall fasteners carries no affiliate link, because the structural screws we would otherwise recommend are too short for the job the article describes. The same applies to machine screws and metric fasteners in our screw size chart.
- Professional consumables are deliberately left unlinked where the audience is wrong for them. Injection epoxies sold in commercial quantities are named in our anchor guides for completeness but not sold, because they are not the right purchase for a homeowner drilling four holes.
Ratings and prices shown in our articles were accurate when checked and will drift. Where a figure matters to a decision — a load rating, an embedment depth, a torque specification — we cite the manufacturer or the code document rather than the retail listing.
Affiliate Relationships
BuildToolHQ participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program and other affiliate programmes. When a reader buys through one of our links we may earn a commission, at no additional cost to the reader.
Commission does not influence what we recommend. We are not paid by any manufacturer to feature a product, we do not accept sponsored placements in our guides, and no brand has approval over our content. Where we recommend a product that happens to be cheaper, or recommend against one that would pay more, that is the recommendation. Several of our articles carry no affiliate links at all because no suitable product exists.
Full details are on our affiliate disclosure page.
Corrections and Updates
Guides are revisited when standards change, products get discontinued, or we find an error in our own research. The "last updated" date on each guide reflects substantive content changes, not routine formatting edits.
