What anchor do I need for concrete?

The right anchor depends on your load, substrate, and application. A 3/16 inch Tapcon concrete screw has a safe working load of 150 lbs and a 1/4 inch holds 188 lbs, which covers electrical boxes and most shelving. Above that, step up to wedge anchors: 306 lbs for 3/8 inch, 750 lbs for 1/2 inch, 937 lbs for 5/8 inch. Those are manufacturer ultimate values divided by a 4:1 safety factor at minimum embedment. Tapcon is a brand of self-tapping concrete screw that threads directly into a pre-drilled carbide bit hole. They are ideal for light to medium loads, removable installations, and attaching wood, metal, or electrical components to concrete, brick, or block. A 3/16 inch Tapcon has a safe working load of 150 lbs in tension and a 1/4 inch 188 lbs, at minimum embedment in 2000 psi concrete. Always use the specified carbide bit size.

How deep should concrete anchors be installed?

Minimum embedment depth varies by anchor type. Tapcon 3/16 inch: 1 inch minimum. Tapcon 1/4 inch: 1 inch minimum. Wedge anchors 3/8 inch: 1-1/2 inch minimum. Can I use concrete anchors in brick or hollow block?

Not all anchors work in all substrates. Wedge anchors require solid concrete - the manufacturer states they should never be used in porous or hollow material such as brick or block. Tapcon screws work in solid concrete, brick, and the face shells of hollow block. For hollow block cavities, use toggle bolts or SNAPTOGGLE anchors. What drill bit size do I need for concrete anchors?

Drill bit size must match the anchor exactly. Tapcon 3/16 inch needs a 5/32 inch carbide bit. Tapcon 1/4 inch needs 3/16 inch. Wedge and sleeve anchors use the same diameter bit as the anchor body (3/8 inch anchor = 3/8 inch bit). Always use hammer mode and a carbide-tipped masonry bit for concrete.
