Why Deck Screws Are Different From Regular Wood Screws
Standard wood screws fail on decks for three reasons:
- Coating failure: Standard zinc plating corrodes within 1-2 seasons outdoors, especially in ACQ pressure-treated lumber which is highly corrosive to standard fasteners.
- Drive failure: Phillips drive strips under the torque needed to drive a 3" screw into pressure-treated wood. Star (Torx) drive is standard on all quality deck screws.
- Shank failure: Deck boards expand and contract seasonally. Coarse-thread bugle-head screws resist withdrawal forces that would pull a fine-thread screw right out.
Coating: The Most Important Decision
For pressure-treated lumber rated ACQ or CA — which is most residential decking sold since 2004 — the lumber itself is corrosive to standard fasteners. You need one of these:
- ACQ-rated coated screws (like GRK RSS, Grip-Rite Prime Guard) — thick polymer coating rated for ACQ contact. Most affordable option.
- Hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) — thick zinc coating, rated for ACQ. Slightly rougher surface than coated screws.
- Stainless steel Type 305 or 316 — best for coastal environments or any location within 1 mile of saltwater. Most expensive but will never rust.
Never use standard bright zinc or electroplated screws on an outdoor deck. They will rust within one season and stain your decking permanently.
Star Drive vs Phillips — Why It Matters
Every professional deck builder uses star (Torx) drive. The geometry of the star bit transfers torque without cam-out — the bit does not slip out of the drive under load the way a Phillips does. When you are driving 400 screws into pressure-treated lumber, cam-out is not just annoying — it strips the screw head and leaves you with a fastener you cannot remove.
T25 is the standard for #10 deck screws. T20 for #8. Always use an impact driver with a matching star bit.
Spacing and Installation
- Space screws 6" from board ends to prevent splitting — pre-drill near ends
- 2 screws per board per joist — never 1
- Drive flush — not countersunk, not proud
- Pre-drill hardwood decking (ipe, cumaru) with 7/64" bit
- Leave 1/8" gap between boards for drainage and expansion
