Quick answer: Before the tool, the technique. The bit spins clockwise, so cutting counter-clockwise around the outside of a box makes that rotation pull the tool into the box edge. Cut clockwise and it pushes away and wanders. That one thing separates a clean fifteen-second cut from a repair.

Fifteen years on the tools, mostly concrete, block and structural fastening. Most of what goes wrong with a cut-out tool is not the tool — it is cutting in the direction that fights the bit instead of the one that helps it. That is a physics problem with a one-sentence answer, and almost nobody writing about these tools mentions it. Every spec below is from the manufacturer’s own published data, and where a maker does not publish a figure, this page says so instead of borrowing one.

Four Different Tools Answer to This Name

“Drywall cutting tool” is used for at least four things that are not interchangeable. Worth being clear before you buy, because two of them look similar in a listing photo.

Cut Direction: Why the Tool Wanders

This is the whole thing. If you take one point from this page, take this one.

The bit spins clockwise, seen with the tool base flat against the board. That rotation pushes sideways, and which way it pushes depends entirely on which way you are travelling.

The ten-second self-test
Plunge into a scrap of board, hold the tool loosely, and watch which way it wants to travel on its own. That is the direction that hugs. You only need to do this once per tool.

The only tool in this category that publishes a runtime figure you can actually plan around: up to 120 outlet boxes on a single 3.0Ah pack.
Milwaukee claim the 4-pole motor cuts about 20% faster than rivals. Treat that as a manufacturer claim rather than a tested one, but the 28,000 RPM and 1 in cut depth are published specs.
REDLINK overload protection matters here more than on most tools — a bit that binds in a stud is exactly the abusive load it exists for.
Its Amazon listing is oddly bare for a product with 1,271 ratings: three bullets, one of which is where it was manufactured. The collet sizes above come from Milwaukee’s distributors, not that page.

At $52.95 this is less than half the price of every other tool here, and it is the only one that arrives with both collets and a bit already in the box.
That combination is worth more than it sounds. The pro habit is a 1/8 guide point for boxes and a 1/4 for window and door cuts — and this is the cheapest route to running both.
Ryobi publishes no RPM figure for it. Every other maker here does, so rather than borrow a number from a review site, that cell stays empty.
If you are cutting a few dozen boxes on your own house rather than hanging for a living, the honest answer is that this does the same job as the $109 tools.

Fastest tool here and the only one rated to cut through two layers of board — which is what fire-rated assemblies use, so it is a real capability rather than a marketing line.
It is also the only tool with a proper dust answer: a dedicated extraction attachment, plus AWS wireless auto-start that spins up a connected vacuum when you pull the trigger. Both sold separately.
Makita also make a circular guide accessory for it, which turns the tool into a can-light hole cutter — a job the others need a separate hole saw for.
Careful with the name. Makita sell the XOC02Z cut-out TOOL and the XDS01Z cut-out SAW, which are different tools. The saw does not take these bits.

What it is like to own
The only tool here with an IP5X dust-rated switch. On a tool whose entire job produces gypsum dust, a sealed switch is the failure point everyone else leaves exposed.
The electric brake is the other practical detail — a bit spinning at 30,000 RPM takes a while to stop, and stopping it fast is what lets you set the tool down without gouging the board.
Bosch does not publish the collet size anywhere we could find, including their own listing. Every other maker here states it plainly. Check before buying bits.
At 4.2 from 122 ratings it has the weakest review profile of the five, on a much smaller sample. Worth weighing against being the only one of the five actually sold by Amazon.

A cut-out tool spins a small bit at around 30,000 RPM and lets you cut an opening through drywall that is already screwed to the wall. Outlet boxes, switch boxes, can lights, HVAC registers — you hang the sheet over the top of them and cut them out afterwards.

Done right, one box takes about fifteen seconds and comes out clean enough that the cover plate hides the edge. The collet on your tool decides which of those you can ever run. The professional habit is a 1/8 guide point for boxes and a 1/4 for window and door openings — often on two tools, because stopping to swap bits mid-hang is not viable.

Spiral direction has to match the tool. A left-hand bit in a tool expecting a right-hand one fights you in exactly the way the cut-direction section describes, and no amount of technique fixes it.

Dust Is the Real Problem

A bit spinning at 30,000 RPM through gypsum throws a fine white cloud that goes everywhere and settles on everything. In an occupied house it is the difference between a tidy job and a week of complaints.

Nothing eliminates it. What helps, in order:

  • A second person holding a vacuum nozzle at the bit. Crude, and still the most effective thing on this list.
  • A dedicated extraction attachment. Makita is the only tool here with one, plus AWS wireless auto-start that spins up a connected vacuum when you pull the trigger. Both sold separately.
  • A sealed switch. Bosch’s IP5X rating is about the tool surviving the dust rather than reducing it — but the switch is where these tools usually die.

Common Mistakes

Cutting clockwise around a box
The single most common error. The bit rotation pushes the tool away from the box instead of into it, and it wanders. Counter-clockwise on the outside, clockwise on the inside.
Screwing the sheet tight near the box before cutting
The board is under pressure against the box behind it and blows out as you complete the cut. Tack the sheet, cut the box, then finish screwing.
Setting the depth too deep
The cutting flute should just penetrate the board. Any more and you are cutting whatever sits behind it — wire, pipe, or the back of the box.
Trusting the guide point as a safety device
It is not one. It rides an edge it can already feel. It will cut straight through a plastic box, and it has no idea a cable is there. Know what is behind the board before you plunge.
Going too slowly on a plastic box
Friction melts the plastic instead of cutting it, and the pilot loses the edge it was riding. Metal boxes and can lights give positive resistance; plastic needs you to keep moving.
Running a dull bit

Watch for nubs and grooves on the box
Nail-in boxes have two depth-setting nubs. Adjustable boxes have V grooves where the slide meets the body. Both will grab a pilot that is not expecting them — ease past rather than forcing through.
